How to play · 15 balls
Straight Pool
Also called 14.1 continuous. Every ball is worth a point, every shot is called, and the best players run racks for hours.
- Balls
- All 15 plus the cue ball
- Rack
- Triangle, any order
- Goal
- Reach the agreed score first, often 100 or 150 points
- Scoring
- 1 point per legally pocketed ball
The opening break
The opening break is defensive. The breaker must call a ball and pocket, or drive the cue ball and at least two object balls to a cushion. Failing that costs 2 points, and the opponent can make the breaker break again.
Playing
- Any ball can be shot at any time. Call the ball and pocket for every shot.
- Each legally pocketed ball scores 1 point, and you keep shooting.
- Extra balls that fall on a good shot count too.
The re-rack
When one object ball is left, the other 14 are racked with the front spot empty. The shooter keeps going, usually pocketing the last ball and breaking the new rack in one shot.
Fouls
- A foul costs 1 point. Scores can go below zero.
- Three fouls in a row cost an extra 15 points.
- Scratches, no cushion after contact and jumping a ball off the table are fouls.
Winning
The first player to reach the agreed score wins.
